Back in 2014, we made a road trip out to Colorado. It was one of my most favorite trips and I have always wanted to go back and do it again. When choosing a summer vacation, we let Jayden make the call since she would soon be off to college. She had been wanting to go to Okoboji. One day we were randomly talking about Okoboji and Cheyenne Frontier Days. Mark asked Jayden where she would rather go. Cheyenne without a doubt was the answer. After county fair, I was making plans and Mark gave me the okay. I planned the trip 2 weeks before we left. Our family was invited to the Eldon Starr ranch Anniversary party. Mark worked on the ranch some 25 years ago and has always wanted to show us. The timing was going to coordinate with our trip, which made him really happy. Jayden also had been trying to figure out a way to go see her friend Kara who has been working and living in Wyoming. We made arrangements to meet up with her too. I researched where to stay in Estes Park Colorado and surprisingly Ram's Horn Village had openings. We stayed their last time, and enjoyed it so much. It is beautiful and they have all the amenities and extras. Because it was a weekday and late July, we got a 20% discount which meant we got our cabin for much less than we did 4 years ago. Everything was lining up. Jake wanted to take Karen and Orrie's suburban for the extra leg room and that was decided the day before we left. Mark and Jake did an oil change and we were set.
were on the road close to 7AM. Our first stop was North Platte, Nebraska where we checked into our hotel for the night. The kids got in the pool for about an hour before it was time to head to the Starr ranch. Luke managed to meet a girl in the hot tub, as usual. It was a drive out in the sand hills, curvy hilly roads out in the middle of nowhere. The farther we drove, the narrower the roads and less civilization. You could look on for miles and see hills and sparse grass. Mark was excited to tell ranch stories all the way there. Eldon and his wife were pleased to see Mark and had a nice party. They had a meal served with amazing prime rib steak and sides. The beef was melt in your mouth good. Mark took us around some of the ranch, corrals, and homes. Later they had a band and all the mixed and other drinks you could imagine. Jayden tried herself a beer. Pretty great she hasn't had one at her age, I am proud of her. I couldnt say the same when I was her age. Mark talked to a few of the other Starr's and Jayden met one of the girls her age that is college rodeoing.
