On Monday we were sporting shorts. On Wednesday we pulled our winter coats, carharrts and gloves out once again. The Dakotas and Minnesota are really getting hit with snow. We are just getting heavy winds. We had thunder and lightning a couple nights this week but only light rain. The wind is what is keeping MArk out of the field.
On Tuesday Mark's head was spinning he was so busy. He has been getting a lot of Salford calls, guys who couldn't do field work in the fall are scrambling to get it done now and in a hurry. He spread nitrogen and AMS over 1100 acres with Mike and Tony's help. He had 8 semi's to load hauling beans.
Tuesday and Wednesday Mark showed Jake how to haul manure and set him loose. Jake not only hauled the manure in the field, he had to load. He did it all under no supervision and worked for several hours two days in a row.
Thursday and Friday the wind has been so strong. Mark cannot spread due to the wind. It is drying out, but too windy. He is anxious to get back in and get started, all the farmers are.

About 50,000 people remained without without power across South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa as of 7 p.m. EDT Thursday, according to poweroutages.us, down from 89,000 earlier in the day. The bulk of those were in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota, where ice and wind were causing much of the problems. Jackson County in Minnesota reported more than 100 power poles had been knocked down.
As we follow the Dakotas, Pine Ridge has now become closer to home, real people with faces and names to Jacob....
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, one of the poorest areas in the country, was bracing for the winter storm that could bring more flooding, the Associated Press reported.
In March, Winter Storm Ulmer dumped heavy snow on Pine Ridge, which lead to severe flooding. Hundreds of people were trapped in their homes. The flooding also damaged or destroyed hundreds of miles of roads and dozens of buildings, disrupted water supplies to thousands and prompted the governor to send in the National Guard, the Associated Press reported.
This next storm is renewing fears of more flooding in an areas still trying to recover.
"Damage is going to be in the hundreds of millions," tribal spokesman Chase Iron Eyes said. "Things are beginning to dry out, but now there's a huge blizzard predicted. On this reservation, it's kind of a constant crisis the way we live here, and these disasters just put us in a perilous position."
As the system moved eastward across the northern and central Rockies and the northern Plains, thundersnow was reported Thursday in parts of the state.
We have warm homes with tractors to move our snow. On the reservation, they live in thin trailer homes and sometimes worse. They are on a wide open range of wind and snow without equipment to move snow. We take these things for granted all the time. We are praying for the families in Pine Ridge.
