Saturday morning Luke went with Grandpa Wahlert (Peepaw) to a Sportsmen's Retreat. Mark took Jake a previous year and they got rained out, only getting in on a small part of the weekend. Luke had wanted to go every since. He wanted to stay the whole weekend. He made plans with Grandpa and early in the morning Saturday the two of them were at Hidden Acres starting with early breakfast. The retreat was a packed weekend with workshops, speakers, food, shooting, and all kinds of activities. I know Luke wore Grandpa out. In fact they came to the house for a brief rest and returned for supper. Luke did a lot of shooting, found a boy named Charlie who goes to our church and did a lot of target shooting and clay shooting with him. Luke said his favorite was the stunt shooters. He later showed me videos on youtube of the famous shooters. It was crazy what they can do!! Luke brought home a golf ball and a softball they shot and autogrpahed. He was so excited when he came home tellling us all about it.
The rodeo season always starts with the Iowa Horse Fair. In the evening Jayden and I went to the IRCA rodeo in Des Moines. Mark was stiff and sore from his horse incident so he opted to stay home. Another rodeo with us girls. Jayden drove the big rig, Dodge truck and Bloomer trailer through Des Moines to the state fair grounds. She does better than I do with it and has less anxiety than I. She tied her horse by Morgan so he didn't have to stand on pavement. It was another cold night and we kept bundled the best we could. I had gloves on and layers. It was windy too and I felt bad for Jayden having to be outside in the cold so much. It just doesn't seem smart to hold rodeos so early in Iowa. The pavilion was warm and I sat and got to stay warm. She had to be down to a shirt to warm up and run in. She ran Astro at his first indoor rodeo with a whole new kind of noise and commotion. It is a hard arena to run in going from pitch dark outside into bright lights and a huge crowd. He handled himself well. He is calm before he runs. He had a really good run for his first time, just some minor errors that cost time. She will get it in time, that horse can fly!
