Sunday was an early morning at the fair. I left the boys in the camper to sleep while Jayden and I got horses fed and ready. The Sunday horse show is more fun and less stressful. It is all the games classes. The kids get to wear their 4H horse project T-shirts and the classes arent judged. The first two classes were break the gait and egg and spoon. Joker isnt a slow moving pleasure horse, so he took second in those. The games classes Jayden ran Joker in were; barrels, poles, flags, keyhole, jumping figure eight. Jayden and Sammy were the only 2 girls in the Senior division grades 10,11,12. Jayden is a barrel racer, so the timed events are her strength. Sammy is a show horse rider, with a horse that has a super slow lope. Sammy won the show classes and Jayden won the timed classes. The girls were pretty even for the high point award. Had she know how close she was to earning the high point award, she would have signed up for all the classes and not drawn out of any. Although it would not mean without the competition. Earning it last year meant something and will always be a special award. Jayden still got an arm full of trophies and Joker really shined. He has been such a good horse for her and she has made a lot of progress with him.
It was terribly hot as always. All the grandparents, Alice, Mark, the boys and I sat on the edge in a small patch of shade. I gave Jayden and her horse water as often as i could. The games in the outdoor arena are in the direct sunlight and it was beaming down on the kids. The games were done and over close to noon. The horses were settled back in their stalls until later in the day when we could get them ready for home. We took a break, got cooled off and had some lunch. Jayden and Jacob got cleaned up for the evening "Parade of Champions" meal. The horse project kids always travel to the hotel and sit together for the meal. When they return to the fairgrounds a couple hours later, they parade across the stage and give a list of their champion awards. While they are gone it's up to the parents to clean out stalls and get animals ready to go home. Today that job was for Luke and I. We shoveled and carried out several wheel barrow loads. IT is a hot, stinky, miserable job. Next I got the trailer hooked up and packed away for the ride home. Luke and I also loaded everything from the horse barn we could in the trailer and had the horses ready to load. As soon as we could check out we were loaded and gone. We were home in the A/C by 8PM. There is nothing like a shower, couch, and A/C after a week like that!
Back at home with all the ribbons and trophies laid out, I'd say these kids had another successful county fair.
