Monday after practice Luke got a hard tackle and was bruised along his hip. He told me he needed a girdle. I didn't even know what that was. So, a quick trip to Des Moines it was. An hour there, an hour to shop and eat, and an hour back to football practice took a big chunk of the day. There are no sporting stores anywhere near us anymore, so we had no choice but to drive to Des Moines. 3 hours later and $129 spent and he was back to football practice.
The boys got their football photos and I put Luke's photo next to Mark's Junior high photo. So fun to see the father son look alike and to see Luke following his dad's footsteps. I would be ok with him just playing in Junior high and not going on to high school, we shall see.
Luke missed his first football game and a week of practice while we were in Florida. Because of his miss, I told him he most likely wouldn't be playing for his first game. Thursday was his first game and both grandparents went, along with Jake, Mark , and I. Mark was reminiscing his younger years, high school years, and football. It was a warm and windy day, but a nice fall temperature. I know only 3 kids on the team, only because I know the parents. The rest of the team varied so much in size from tall to short, think to thick. The opposing team, Woodward Granger, was just plain tall and built. To my surprise, not long after a kid took a hit and ended up with a concussion, Luke played defense for the remaining game as a safety. It was a strange feeling the first time I watched him run out onto the field. We recently watched the movie, "Rudy" about a determined football player. I am sure it was motivating and encouraging to Luke. He ran out with his feet moving and looked enthusiastic. There was only one time where he really got in on a tackle in a group. It was fun to see him play and also made me nervous. I just don't want him to get hurt. The Woodward team made lots of passes and could run the ball, winning with a 26 to 0. Ogden had one tall player and he played both offense and defense. He was a one man team. They continually handed off the ball to him and he was also the main tackler. It was fun to watch the kids play and Luke seems to enjoy it.
Friday night we went to the Southeast Valley Game to watch nephew Rylie play. He is a senior and was awarded Homecoming King last week. The game was SEV rated #2 versus OBDIGD rated #1. The game was exciting from the beginning. The opposing team could pass and catch and score well. They had a great quarterback and offensive team. SEV knew they had to keep their offense off the field by working our offense. Play after play after play it was a hand off and Lathe M ran the ball. He would gain a yard here a couple there, but always making a first and 10. This plan ran the clock and it was worked. Lathe is a distant relative, a senior, not a very tall or big built kid, but a tough one nicknamed the bull. He was like a bulldozer every play pushing and pushing gaining yards. There were also some awesome plans and touchdowns. It was a great game to watch as SEV beat the number one ranked team, the team that won state finals the last two years, the team that was undefeated for 28 games!!One evening Jake, Luke, and I went to Fort Dodge to watch Andrew play in his football game. He is sure a little guy out on the field. Afterward we went out to eat with Blake and Ali and the kids at Pizza Ranch. We had a fun time eating and laughing.
