Fall is my favorite season of the year. The air is warm during the day and the nights cool most of the time. The colors are changing, apples are on the trees and pumpkins are used for decorating. Many evenings, the sky is warm with orange and red sunsets. Harvest is in full swing with combines running and crops are filling the bins. The fall season in Iowa has sporadic weather. In the past two weeks we have had days in the 60's for the high and 40's for the low. A few days later we are hitting 90 degrees. You don't know whether to turn on the a/c or the heat or go without either. Late on 9/28/21 Wednesday we got rain and it carried over into little rain showers off and on into Saturday. That gave the harvest crew a chance to rest and take a break. Mark was able to go to Luke's football game in Van Meter and have some movie nights at home.
10/12/21 Tuesday was our first day of combining corn. We started beans on September 24. I hope that corn will go fast. It has been super nice weather this fall, I am grateful. Mark is getting tired and run down, that also tends to lead to grouchy. He is holding up, but the days are long.
Jake helps when needed by running the grain cart. I alternate with Karen taking meals to the field. Mark works long and late hours. He has enough help now that he is able to have some flexibility in getting away and taking on different roles in the field. We have three shiny blue semis making the rounds in the field during harvest. These are especially crucial to our Dayton farm in order to keep the combine rolling. We had great yields and have been fortunate and blessed with another great season of harvest.
