Iowa State University college orientation was Monday and Tuesday and I took Jayden. Luke went along for day one for Cy's Sibs day. Right after lunch, he got to enjoy a special afternoon of activities He got a tour of the campus, went bowling, and rock climbing. He was so excited when he got back and told us he has it all figured out, he is going to ISU and major in Ag marketing. He also came home with a bag, t-shirt and sunglasses from his program. I am going to turn that kid into a Cyclone yet. What a fun couple of days. I was reminiscing my college days living in the doors, going to class on campus, the whole atmosphere. I could give Jayden so many pointers and advice because I have been there done that. She will have a whole new experience and explore new areas, but I really think she will enjoy her time there. We started the morning getting her official student ID card. She was excited that her photo turned out so well. We also ran into my high school friend, Shanwa and her daughter. We contacted one another last week and made plans to meet for supper at the end of the day. It was fun to bump into each other that morning too. Shawna's daughter Emmalynn is very sweet and petite. She looks to be 12 or 13 and gets asked that a lot. Jayden and I took a tour of the dorm where she will be living, Geoffery hall. She is so excited about it, they are so nice and very new. We ate lunch down along campus at the Fuzzy Taco. In the afternoon we heard Dr. Tyler speak to all the kids from the college of Ag and Life sciences. Then they split everyone up by major. Where most kids were in groups of 12 to 20, Jayden was the lone person with her advisor who is also the director of the Ag college. I recognized him as one of my former professors. so crazy. We sat down in his office and Jayden got a private session. It was so cool! They talked about her not knowing what she wants to do and being able to explore majors. He was so helpful and really built Jayden's confidence. Their academic minds and ways of thinking were very much alike. He told her she needed to find a job that she is passionate about and not to focus on salary and high paying jobs. I told him she loves to rodeo. He quickly told her to forget everything he just said and if she plans to rodeo, she is going to need a really good high paying job. He wasn't kidding either. He also complimented her on her good ACT scores in English and talked about possible scholarships. This was the first time I could see Jayden getting excited about attending ISU. She also has an interest in the study abroad programs. Later, we met Shawna and Emma at the dinning hall for dinner. It was really nice to sit and talk about the girls and their experiences and plans. They both decided they would look each other up this fall. Emma will also be trying out for the ISU flag team.
On day two, Dr. Tyler scheduled Jayden for a 7:45 morning appointment in order to be the first to schedule classes for the day and beat the mass of other students signing up for classes. It was a challenge for us driving from home, parking, taking the bus, and finding our way around campus and back to his office by 7:45 AM. As she is in explorative Ag, Dr. Tyler scheduled her in a little bit of everything. One class,Ag communications, he told us was an upper classmen course and hard to get into. SHe will have animal science, biology, and economics, along with some others. She is excited and I am excited with her.
