5/14/17 Since
Mark’s mom was going to be gone on Mother’s Day Mark grilled steaks and had her
over for supper on Friday. I fixed dinner then we sat outside by the fire pit.
It was a lovely evening. Mother’s day morning started out like any other
weekday. I fixed Mark a sack lunch for the field because he would be plattning
all day. He had all the guys work . I know it is mid May and the
crop needs to get planted, but I still think a person could take a day off, or
even a few hours. It is mother's day and the hired men are not getting to honor the day either. Mark has always been hard core in planting season and nothing
stops the planter except rain. He felt bad that it was Mother’s day and
apologized many times. I wasnt going to let it ruin the day, I took the kids to church in Ames, I enjoy going to
Cornerstone and it feels like a special treat when we go. With the college
students home for the summer, the congregation was much smaller. After church
we ate Mexican, then we changed our
clothes and went to Ledges park in Boone. I cannot even remember the
last time I have been to Ledges. We attempted to go another year for Mother’s Day
before Luke was born and it was flooded so we sat under a tree above the park.
I don’t think that really counts. Today there was a lot of people walking,
wading in water, and having picnics. We found a hiking trail that had stair
steps and went way up and along a windey trail. It was nice and we all enjoyed it. Back at the
bottom we trekked up along the creek. It was sunny and 85 and couldn’t have
been better. The cold water, the sand under your feet and sometimes squishy mud between your toes was awesome. Yesterday when I talked to my mom about going to a park, she was
not thrilled with the idea and said she would rather get her toe nails painted, so that she
will do this week with Jayden. When I told Jayden my plan for today, she rolled
her eyes at me and asked why I like to go to parks so much just to "sit and
watch the trees grow." I have always had a love for the outdoors. More than
living in the country and being on a farm, actually going out and enjoying the
simple breeze, sunshine, blue sky, birds, flowers, hiking, and water. Enjoying all the amazing things God created without all the distractions that humans have created.I hope to
pass that on to the kids and that they will enjoy the outdoors, hiking and
camping someday with their families. Mark, he has never really enjoyed it much,
says having to work outside all the time, he would rather not be outside for fun if he had to choose. Jayden did enjoy herself today as did all of us. I am glad we went and I will make a point to get there again soon.
The day before mothers day, Jayden brought home a kitten
from her friend Erica. She claimed that the dog had killed all but the last one
and we needed to take it. I could not say no. After losing my little Skippy cat
and recently Daytona went missing, I figured we needed another. Luke took to
her right away, naming her Lilac. She is a puff ball full of long fluffy hair.
She is around 4 weeks with big blue eyes and affectionate. Jayden and Luke came
up with the name Lilac as the Lilac bushes are in full bloom.
