9/3/15 The rodeo weekend began today and
won’t stop until Tuesday. I am excited and I am also dreading it at the same
time. It has turned out to be so much more than I thought when I signed up to
do this. In the morning, Jayden and I met up at the arena with several others
for media day. We saddled horses and
were dressed for the rodeo. The school kids came down to the arena in groups
for a little meet and greet. The kids were fun and entertained. Jake and Luke
went with us too. The kids heard from the rodeo clowns and queens. They even
got a tour of the Sports Medicine trailer. It was very hot and took a couple
hours. The newspaper was there taking photos too. Jayden made the paper. At
6:00 we headed back to Dayton for practice. We practiced hearing the bomb going off and
Traveler was very startled, but handled it well. For me, this was the hardest
practice so far. Instead of having a light practice before 4 nights of
performing at the rodeo, which made the most sense to me, our practice was long
and hard. Our coaches said our first run through would be a practice run, then the
second a rodeo run. I thought that would be it. We would get a break and rest our horses up for the long weekend. It was so hot and the arena
footing was very wet and deep heavy sand. I felt so bad for my horse. At the
end of the night we had run through our pattern 5 times without any breaks. I
was sore and my horse was dripping in sweat. I
thought our horses should be rested before the weekend and not rung out and
sore. If my horse felt anything like I did when I crawled in bed that night, I
felt bad. I gave him a little bute that night and myself some ibuprofen. I did not sleep well nervous for the weekend.
