The fair has begun. Tuesday was judging
day. Jacob had the most with 5 photos, 3 of which were held back for state fair
consideration. One of the photos got honorable mention. His farm chemical
safety project was also held back, but only ended up with a blue. Grandma and Grandpa Wahlert helped him with the entire project, teaching him along the way. This was
probably the most involved project that took the most work. He did a 4-H poster
of a harvester harvesting corn that had 4 leaf clovers. That was held back,
but got a blue. The most disappointing was his two drawings. He had a tractor
and a motor home. The judge was very critical and particular. She complimented
Jacob on his ability and took me aside and told me he is an artist and will go places with his
talent. She was very impresssed and said I need to start making a portfolio of his progress through the years. She gave him 2 red ribbons because she felt he needed to include his
source. He even had a write up that listed the elements of design and explained that
he looked on the internet for ideas. That was pretty harsh. The most exciting
was his Food and Nutrition project. He made Krumkaka and it made it to the IA
State fair. Mawgee helped him with this project and Elaine Elm helped him make
them. He really talked a lot
to the judge and had a cute display box. The fair called us to congratulate
Jake and to invite him to the a special food auction. Wed evening we went to the fair to
see Jacob’s food auctioned. We had to sit through a long show. All the many many fashion
review kids modeled, they had a Little Miss fair queen contest, and the fair Queen and
King contest. Abby got runner up. She was very poised, beautiful, and did an
amazing job. We were very surprised she didn’t get chosen and she was too. 2 hours later, Jacob
stood on the stage and had to talk about his Krumkaka. He did a great job even
though he was so nervous. It was pretty neat to see who bid on his Krumkaka, his 3rd grade school teacher Mrs. Franey.
Jayden took 2 photos both got blues. She
took her chocolate chip cookies that everyone loves. She altered the recipe and
compared contents in her cookie dough. She has had so many compliments on her cookies and has made them for so many occasions. She got a blue on her project. She did
the best on her Operation Christmas Child project and it made it the the state
fair. Yeah, we were so excited. Both kids get to participate in the Parade of
Champions. During the fair Luke also attended soccer camp 3 nights in Ames. The
Baptist church where he went to AWANA offerd a skills and drills soccer camp.
The camp is for 3 hours with a bible study. Luke was reluctant at first, but
once he got to camp he loved it. The first night they gave him a t-shirt, bag,
sweat band, bracelet, water bottle, and soccer ball. Wow! He enjoyed
it and hopefully learned a few things.
