Luke woke to the sound of birds at 5:30 Am and crawled into our bed. I didn’t
sleep much after that. I got up and took our laundry down to the laundromat on
the resort. It was a peaceful, quiet and cool walk. I could handle waking
up this early everyday if I had this kind of view and weather. Our resort had a
waffle breakfast buffet for all the guests. Luke is not shy at all, he sees the
neighbors and goes and joins their family at a table. He cracks me up. He also went up to another lady that he recognized and patted her and said "boo". He is
such a people person. He also took his mini waffles, stacked them on top of
each other with cool whip in the middle and announced he made a waffle
sandwich. The rest of the morning the kids played with the neighbors riding
bikes. I sat in our little hammock to read. This afternoon we went on our
mountain ATV adventure. I booked this back at home and thought it sounded fun.
We drove a ways out onto some back road. We were given a 6 seater UTV, helmets,
and sent on our way. I was not feeling very safe after talking to the owner. He
went on and on about accidents and talked about how crazy busy it is out there
today. We were on our won, no guide. The trails are narrow and you have to watch out for each other and
sometimes jeeps will pass you. I was beginning to rethink my great idea. Mark
drove and the three kids were in the back. The trail was rough and rugged, way
more than I thought. There were ruts, ravines, rocks, and hairpin turns along
cliffs. It was definitely an adventure. We stopped once and let Luke get in the
front, his neck was hurting from his seat. We drove all the way up the mountain
then back down to a campground. That was one way and it took an hour. Then we
had to go back the way we came. I got to drive on the way back. I thought it
was fun. The kids said I was a fast driver.
At one point I had to pull over and let a group of 10 jeeps pass. After
driving the trail, I cannot begin to imagine taking a jeep through it! I
enjoyed it, but I think it got a little too long for everyone. Back near our
resort, we had an early supper with plans to swim. A thunder cloud moved
through, so we waited for it to pass before swimming. On July 11 and July 12,
on two separate occurrences, two people were killed in Rocky Mountain National
Park by lightning while hiking. Quite scarey. By the time the kids went to the
pool it was evening and had cooled off. The pool water felt very warm compared
to the outside air. They still had fun and stayed in the water for quite some
time. Out of the pool was more riding bikes and playing with the neighbor kids
until it was dark.
