Having just been in Florida in February and seeing this damage left behind from the storm brought it close to home. Sanibel is one of our favorite places to visit and the damage left behind will take years to recover. The very hotel we stayed just before the causeway had severe damage. The news reporters were airing live from the very balcony we stayed. We watched as the beach, pool, and trees were overtaken. It is so sad. I feel for the people with homes and businesses and the loved ones that didn't leave when warned. So much damage! I pray for those living in Florida.
Hurricanes are no longer a surprise. Meteorologist's watch and follow them for quite a time preparing residents for the storm. They warn and educate people of the dangers. They have mandatory evacuations in some areas and hope others will be smart and make the right choice. Over and over they tell people once the storm occurs, if you have an emergency, responders will not be able to help or rescue. Taken from the internet...On 8/29/22 A monster-sized Hurricane Ian pummeled the state of Florida on
Wednesday with crushing storm surge, obliterating wind speeds and torrential
rainfall, leaving a swath of devastation from the southwestern coast across the
I-4 corridor. The hurricane, the fifth-most powerful to ever hit the U.S., left
countless homes and businesses wrecked or underwater and nearly 2.7 million
people without power. Less than 24 hours after Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa
just west of Fort Myers, dramatic search-and-rescue efforts — some by
helicopters and airboats — were still underway. Fort Myers was devastated, no electricity or water, and drastic damage and destruction. The causeway to Sanibel Island and the Pine Island bridge
were rendered impassible and in need of structural repairs, DeSantis said. After touring Charlotte and Lee counties, the governor
remarked that "Sanibel is destruction" and got hit with "really
Biblical storm surge."
We were really concerned about our good friends who recently moved to Florida. Dan and Angelia had only been in Florida since June and bought a home only a month ago. We didn't know how they would be affected by the storm. They took it in good humor sending us videos of their family in the back pool as the winds were making waves in their pool and trees were swaying. Then it got really bad and we didn't hear from them for 12 hours. That is scary. They had little to no damage where they were but for so many others, the damage so so severe.
