They called it the Break Out Rodeo in Adel because it was the first IRCA rodeo held this season. Its crazy to think the season is just starting and it will soon be over. Many were cancelled and there will not be a finals this year due to the pandemic. A contestant can buy their membership for $100 and then another card next season for another $100 and all rodeos will go towards the 2021 year and finals. Doesn't seem right, I don't think their should be a fee for this season's card. College rodeo members had to pay $300 for a membership and only got to compete in a few rodeos and no finals were held. Finals are the end of the season event with 3 day competition, year end awards, buckles, saddles, etc. That's a lot of money going nowhere.
Saturday night Mark, Luke, Jayden and I went to the Adel rodeo. It was hot and humid as it is every year. It was nice to see the sea of trailers parked with contestants ready to rodeo. The bleachers filled as the night went on flowing out into crowds of people standing. There were no masks and no social distancing. There were so many people, more than I had ever seen at that rodeo in the past. I think because of the pandemic, this being one of the few things people could get out and do, it created a mass crowd. Ironically there was a staff member spraying down the gates and handles. Um, I really don't think that makes sense. Adel is a big arena with a lot of sand making for a heavy and deeper ground. Jayden was bottom of the run, meaning the last on the ground. Being the 15th barrel racer to run, there are big ruts and grooves in the ground making it more challenging. The fastest time of the rodeo was a 17.5, Joker wasn't running his hardest, was wide on 1st and third and his time was 19.0. I could see that Jayden was very discouraged, she had been so hopeful. This was going to be a big run for her and she hoped to place in the money. There was a lot of room for improvement in her run, yet the time wasn't that bad. I am glad she got to make a run this season with covid and she knows how sick her horse was only months ago. Joker is a great horse and hopefully soon she will make some consistent top runs.
