I have decided not to write a daily blog, I feel I am spending too much time blogging.
Sunday is the Lord's day, a day of rest, a holy day to be honored. In this day and age many events are planned on Sundays, sports, graduations, 4H meetings, jobs and more. Field work is a choice and one that we typically try not to do on Sundays. On occasion, when the timing becomes a major factor at the end of a season we need to work; late planting from wet weather, planting when the forecast shows rain for a solid week ahead, or harvesting before the snow falls. Sometimes it becomes necessary because of the season. Mark's Uncle Lavern has never worked a Sunday in his life. He too is a farmer. What an awesome example of honoring the Lord's day. It is still very early to plant, we have a lot in the ground, we have finished our beans and covered a lot of acres of corn already. I do not understand why we work on this Sunday. When we work, we also are requiring our hired help to work. We are not being an example of honoring the Lord's day to them, and they are not getting a much needed break during such a busy time. Mark had a break down along with getting sprayed in the face and all over his arms with starter fertilizer. He was to driven to stop and shower until his employee showed up to take over. He should have rinsed immediately. Farm chemicals are so hazardous and scary. I have to trust that Mark is making the best choice for our farm and support, yet I don't always have to agree.
Meanwhile, I took Luke to Spring Lake for a bike ride around the lake. It was a gorgeous day and we enjoyed it. Luke likes the Lake a lot more when it is busy and lively with people. I kind of enjoyed the small numbers.
Monday reminded me of June. It kind of felt like we skipped ahead a couple months. It feels a bit like summer. When I put the dogs in for the night at 10PM, it was still 65 degrees. What a lovely day. Luke and I went to Ames to celebrate Grandma W birthday and get groceries. We went to the garden center at Lowe's and got all kinds of flowers to plant. I then let Grandma pick anywhere she wanted to eat for carry out. She picked cheeseburger and french fries. That would not have been my first pick. We sat in the car by a park and ate, because restaurants are carry out only. Luke went on home to spend the night and have a day off, I guess it was another snow day for him. Jake worked all day at Nate's. Back home I planted all my flowers, and spent as much time outside as I could. Jake and I took an evening bike ride. It has been so perfect. The bugs have not come out yet!! I wish it could stay that way.
Tuesday I wished my friend Paula O happy birthday and just hours later found out her father committed suicide in the night. Such devastating hard news. I prayed all day for my friend. I am heartbroken for her. The day was cold and terribly windy.
Wednesday was another colder and windy day. Mark finished planting for the season around 10:30 at night. He ran out of seed with half a pass left. He had the boys help him and had to literally use buckets to get the last seeds they could scrape out to load the planter. All is right in Mark's world with his crops planted. He is like a soldier in battle when its planting or harvest season. What a sigh of relief to be done. It has been a great season for planting in ideal ground conditions. Farmers haven't had a break like this in a long time. The trouble is, the economy is in a disaster, which leads to bigger problems ahead. If it's not one thing it's another, goes the story of a farmer.
Thursday was sunny and beautiful. I turned the horses out on grass for the first time all season. It is fun to see them make their first run of freedom. They eat and run and roll. I only let them out for two hours the first several times. Too much luscious green grass can lead to many problems for a horse. Tex, Traveler, Ace, and Joker enjoyed their grass. The first time I moved Ace alongside the others in a pen, he went to running and bucking back and forth over and over. I got this cool photo of him.

In the evening Mark and I rode horses, he on Tex and I on Joker. it was the perfect evening, sunshine, warm, no wind, and not many bugs. Later I made a new recipe that was excellent fajita style steak and freshly picked asparagus. The first pick of the season. Mmm good!
Friday brought wind. Jake has been going to work everyday for the last 2 weeks as soon as he gets his school done. He even has his lunch there. In Jake's free time he works on his vehicles up at our shop too. Luke leaves shortly after lunch to go either with dad, mow, or help Grandma with odd jobs. The boys are always busy.
