I have decided to call Monday March 16th day 1 of social distancing. That is the day when the announcement was made to no longer be out in groups larger than 10. "Social distancing" is a new word, a foreign word we have never used or heard. It means to keep your distance when socializing. The recommendation is not to get closer than 6 feet of those around you. Crazy right?!? Today is Thursday, day 4. We haven't really been isolated at all and I dread when we really are. Last night we had roping practice in our arena. We also had the cousins Jaynie and Rylie come hang out with our kids. I told them they were welcome to come as often as they like and stay as long as they like. Luke was still at Wade's and his family went to Des Moines. We are not social distancing or staying home and it feels good. At the same time so many are hiding out in their homes scared to death to leave.
The latest announcement was ISU, UNI, and U of I have decided to go to online classes for the remainder of the semester. No students will be returning to the college to finish classes in a regular classroom setting. I know many went home for Spring Break, anticipating returning in a few weeks. It will be chaos as they are asking students to get all their belongings out of the dorms in only a few days. That is going to mean mass numbers of people in the halls and dorms moving. I am sure that other colleges will be doing the same. Again, it just doesn't make sense! I wonder what international students that live on campus will do? Returning to finish school has been the hope that the kids needed to keep them motivated and positive. Jaynie was here last night, sad because she may not have prom, a softball season, and so much more as a high school senior. She was very optimistic and positive having hope in finishing the remaining semester. She is now worried she may not have a graduation ceremony, or even worse, a reception. My friend Carolyn's daughter is a senior too and has been working and practicing all season for her senior year of tennis. I can't imagine what these high school seniors are going through. Your senior year means so much, it is everything. There are so many opportunities, experiences, events, activities, awards, and celebrations to be had. They will miss out on so much. This virus will rob them of so much. I hate to think negative thoughts and want to stay hopeful for their sake, but if the colleges close for the semester, I cannot see how the public schools would stay open. How crushing this is on all those kids. This is just one more aspect in the damage this virus is doing. The sickness from this virus is just one small aspect. There will be so much more to come. My fear is for the mental state and repercussions of this on people. God is our rock, he has us and will protect us. He has shaken everyone and will shake us to the core. My hope is that others will seek God in this different, confusing, chaotic, pandemic.
