Sunday we took Luke ice skating for a birthday treat. He invited his church youth group. I am sure the cold weather played a factor, so there wasn't a good turn out. We drove 40 minutes to Ames in the frigid cold to attend church and go skating from 2-4. The temps were below zero and the roads were not the best. However, all the other families live in Ames, so their drive would be just across town. I just would have appreciated an RSVP. There are around 12 kids in his group and Luke handed out invitations on paper as well as the group leader/pastor sent a group email message to the parents with all my contact info. Not one single RSVP. I couldn't believe it, not even the pastor. or his leaders. I dont understand it! I am sure it was discouraging, but Luke had two boys in his group attend and still had fun. Deep down, I know he was disappointed. The best, was two very eager and excited 180 leaders, Sandra and Danny. These aren't just leaders, but the head leaders of the whole 180, so it was kind of a big deal. They made Luke's day and I was so thankful they came.
One of the boys had never skated and it took several laps with the walker and hanging onto the wall for him to get moving. Luke is a pretty good skater, but he would slow down and shuffle along with him and often even hold his hand to help him out with Sandra or Danny holding the other. His mother waited the whole time and later told me how much she appreciated Luke. She smiled and said, he is a good friend. It is true, most kids would have skated off and left the slow kid on his own. Luke was an awesome friend, kind, and helpful. He also got to know the other boy a little better after their fun skate day.
On Wednesday we met with Grandparents and Wade's family for supper at Hickory Park. We met early with our group and had plenty of time to eat, chat and open gifts. Crafty Grandma W. made Luke his very own Dr. Pepper cake. Afterward, we went to taekwondo and Krav.
Thursday was Luke's actual birthday and he got the whole day off school and spent every minute of it on the computer playing Roblox. I had to peel him away for lunch and dinner. I made him take an hour break with me and we went outside and built a snowman! It was the warmest it has been in awhile and the snow was thick and sticky, perfect snowman weather.
When it is your birthday, you get to use a special plate at dinner, the "You Are Loved" plate. I made the plate many years ago in one of my MOPS (Mother's of Pre-schoolers) groups. I can't remember what year or how old the plate is, but it only comes out on birthdays for that special person.
