Carson King was just an ordinary guy who has been in the news daily for the past two weeks and has turned famous. He is the man who raised nearly $3 million for children's charity after asking for beer money on television and was later called out for old tweets, is still getting a day and a beer named after him in his home state of Iowa.
Taken from an online article:
King, 24, made headlines earlier this month when he went on a taping of ESPN's "College Gameday" at Iowa State University asking people to send him money for beer. His sign read, “Busch Light supply needs replenished" and included information on how to send him money through Venmo, the popular money transfer app.
King ended up receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars he decided to donate to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Soon after, Busch Light decided to match the donation — and said they would send King a year's supply of beer with his face on the can.
But after King's good deed was picked up by media outlets, a reporter at the Des Moines Register working on a profile of King discovered two racist jokes he had posted in 2012, when he was 16 years old, reportedly based on something from Comedy Central's "Tosh.0,"
THis is the part of the story that raised so much attention. Everyone was angry including myself at the news reporter who went and dug through Carson's social media looking to dig up trash and expose the guy. Here is a young man who is doing a great thing and raising tons of money for the hospital. Most kids after the first $1000 came through would have kept the money and used it for beer money. Instead he took just what he needed to buy a case of beer and gave the rest to the Iowa Children's hospital. I am amazed at his generosity and disgusted by the Des Moines register. The reporter ended up getting fired and ironically had many racist, sexist, posts on social media himself. People were so angry, the Des moines register hired police presence due to so many threats. Digging up someones past from 8 years ago is just down right awful. It just goes to show how society is, no matter how good something or someone is, we have to go and find the dirt on them. Busch Light cut all ties with him as well. It later came out that Anheuer Busch also had been a major advertiser and sponsor of the very show that Carson got in trouble for quoting.
King went out of his way to express remorse and Busch Light still cut ties with him.
Thankfully all Iowans and majority of people were supportive. He attended the Iowa football game the following week and was honored by fans and children. He was even on the Today show and many television shows. On Wednesday, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, was "Carson King Day" in the midwestern state.
“Individuals like Carson King demonstrate how ‘Iowa Nice’ isn’t just a slogan, but our way of life,” the proclamation states. "Carson King can showcase who we are as a people, not only by selflessly donating to a worthy cause, but spreading the message of generosity."
Carson ended his fundraising on the 30th of September. I wanted to make a donation and got on Venmo. I counted 89 donations in one hour while I was making a donation. What a story!
