Like Father Like Son... Mark got in the field on Monday and began training Jake. After a few hours, both he and Mark were running the big John Deere tractors with Salfords. Jake and Mark ran in the field together Monday through Saturday. Jake worked an average of 7 hours and ran 12 hours on Saturday. He really liked it, but as a mom I thought he was working too long of hours. Maybe I am just not ready for him to grow up. By Thursday we had the planter going and planting corn. I took lunch to Mark and Jake each day in the field and evening meals a few nights during the week. I got about an hour of school in each morning with Jake before he went to the field. That was a challenge in itself. The boys wanted a photo and I really liked the father/son and their tractors. Those tractors are such beasts in size!
Navy Retirement...Friday evening Mark and Mike quit early in the field in order to attend Dan Buhr's retirement party. He retired from 30 years in the Navy and from ISU ROTC program. He reserved the Alumni center and had a great event. We arrived late, but got to hear some Dan speak and some of the people honoring him. They had food catered in and a big crowd. I am so glad to call them friends. Dan has accomplished so much in his life and within the military. He is very respected and such a like able guy with a great personality. He is retiring and has a new job lined up with Rockwell Collins. It will be hard to see them go. Even though it will only be a few hours, it will be hard. Dan and Angelia are our best friends. On Saturday morning, he had an official ceremony. I felt we should have been there for that, but planting is always the priority. I had to take lunch and dinner out. The wind was ferocious over the weekend. We got some warm sunshine, but the wind was unpleasant.
Checking calves...
When Mark is in the field, he has Jayden or I check the cows and calves. It is not my favorite thing to do. Mark told me to carry a stick because there are a couple mean cows. If that doesnt boost your confidence! Heck with a stick, I took a pitch fork and sure enough I could tell you the ear tags of the mean mama cows by the time I got done.
Jayden and Luke like the little calves, they sure are cute. There is a sick one that lets you go right up and pet on him. He's a little slow, but fun for us to see him up close.
