2/4/17 Mark got up early and went to exercise on the hotel elliptical machine. Then our family attended a hotel informational meeting promoting the areas attractions. They had free pastries and fresh fruit, so we enjoyed it. The birds greet everyone in the mornings with their loud songs in the trees at the hotel. They come in a large flock at sunrise and sunset for a short time and leave. We decided to go driving and see some sights. We went north and watched some surfers for awhile. It is interesting to watch the native surfers. They live a very different lifestyle, have dread locks, lots of tattoos, and drive big jeeps and trucks. Their vehicles are rough and so are they. Then we drove on to the blow hole. It was a steep rough rocky hike down where we watched for awhile. The blow hole is kind of eerie as so many tourists have gotten too close and get sucked in or the waves come over and wash people into the ocean. We saw plenty of memorial markers along the hike from lives lost. We did some more driving following the edge of the mountains curvy roads. The view of the ocean was awesome and the plants and rocks vary so much from area to area. We were back in time for lunch and fish tacos form the local market was the vote. We rented our snorkel gear for the remainder of our stay and had an interesting experience. I discovered Maui has cockroaches too. We had one crawling over our snorkel gear as big as my thumb. We had the boys get used to the gear by swimming in our hotel pool. They had a great time and Luke made some friends in the water, of course one was a little girl. Jayden and I liked to soak in the sun any chance we got by the pool. We put on lots of sunblock, but always manged to get a little burnt. Jayden did her homework on her poolside beach chair. Her college class had deadlines and she had no choice.

In the evening we cleaned up and went to dinner at a nearby hotel beach house restaurant with Grandma and Grandpa. We were all pretty tired in the evening, by 9:00 we were in bed for the night. Mark and Jake on the other hand had a very short night. They left the hotel at 2:30AM on a bus for a sunrise volcano tour. They were the first ones on and the last ones off making many stops in between. Most people slept on the way up to the top, a two hour drive. At the top of the volcano Haleakala they got to the top and looked at stars until sunrise. The view was above the clouds, the air was very thin and chilly. They had a big breakfast on the way back down and arrived back to our hotel at 11:30AM, a 9 hour trip.
