10/2/16 Our week was a typical fall week. Mark’s been in
the field combining. He typically hauls the semis to and from the field. Mike
runs the combine, Cory the grain cart or semi, and Tony semi. Mark rarely gets
to run the combine. It has been going ok
with break downs here and there, a belt, a chain, etc. The corn is coming in
around 18% moisture and yielding up to 230 bushels per acre. As long as the
weather holds, we can keep running. Mark likes to let everyone quit by 8PM so
they are well rested each day. They put in some long hours, especially Mike
who is here every morning by 6AM. He likes to get here ahead of the game and
get equipment greased and tuned up ready to roll. We are so fortunate to have him. We like to let him head home
by 5 when we can. On occasion Orrie will run the combine a few hours too. Mike
is a hard worker, loyal, positive and willing. He is a gem of an employee. He
is a godly man and that shines through in him also. We are fortunate to have
him. Mark is getting tired and puts in some long hours. He is up around 5:30
and to bed at 10. Some nights he catches a brief nap then has to go move and
dry corn. He is a hard working man and keeps this farm rolling smoothly.
The weather this week has been very fall like, 70’s. I love this time of year when the air cools off at night and the apples are ready. I could live without the little bitey noseeum bugs, gnats, and lady bugs. This week school every day, taekwdono, youth group and we watched Rylie play football. Thursday Mark and I went to Des Moines for chiropractor appointments and Jayden gave a riding lesson. Friday Jayden and I went to the ICCC college rodeo, then I took her to her youth retreat at Hidden Acres at 11PM. She stayed until Sunday and had a good time. She was in a different group with Ames high girls and slept terrible. Saturday I had a rare day to myself. The boys were in the field all day and I had a quiet day. I got a lot of things done around home and enjoyed a little bit of solitude. Sunday was church and the ISU rodeo. Jayden has college on her brain and with that comes rodeo. She is focused on majoring in rodeo and choosing a career along the way. She is not academic or career oriented, it is all about rodeo right now. I do hope she can get her priorities in line. She also is looking at out of state college rodeo teams. I am trying to point her in the direction of ISU. For once in a very long time, they have a traveling rodeo team and doing really well. I think ISU has a lot of potential to get the program going strong. It will be interesting in the next year to see what path Jayden takes to college.
