Jake and his Chickens

7/27 Our chickens keep growing and we have been waiting for our first egg. Jake feeds and checks them in the mornings and Luke at night. Jake takes the most interest in the birds. He gets a kick out of their talking and noises. He will take them out of their cage and hold them. He named his black and white striped hen Elda. After we were gone to Spring Lake she died. I blamed the heat and not having enough water. I felt bad that of all the chickens it had to be Jake’s. Today I found our first chicken egg. I was just as excited as Jake!We have eggs!

3 Rodeo Run

7/25/16 This was a 3 rodeo week. Monday Afton. Tuesday Britt, Wednesday Indianola. Monday, Jayden hauled with the Nelson’s to Afton. It is so nice to have another family to share the load with. They picked her up and dropped her off because we were on the route and it was 1:30 AM when Jayden got home. She had a repeat run from Sunday, Ace bowed wide at the first barrel and lost a little time going into second. Tuesday I drove her and her horse Tex to the Nelsons and Jayden went on to the TMRA rodeo. She wanted to take Tex to make a run for points and give Ace a break.  Tex was chargey and took all the barrels extremely wide. It showed that he hasn’t been worked with as much as Ace. He isn’t the kind of horse that will stay sharp with little work. Jayden spent the night at Morgan’s and I got her the next day. Wednesday, Mark took Jayden to her rodeo in Indianola. He did not know Jayden would be running in slack and it made for a late night. These late rodeos really get to him.

Morgan and Greenfield Rodeo

Friday the girls slept in. It was the hottest day yet, with overnight rain the humidity  was unbearable. In the evening we went to the Hamilton county fair to watch Alivia show her bucket bottle calf. It was pretty cute and she looked like big stuff out there showing her calf . The show ring was air conditioned, but lost power as soon as it started. It was still nice until you went outside. When we ate it was sticky and unpleasant! The power went out so the fair was releasing animals.   >Saturday the girls rode their horses and set up poles. Jayden gave Morgan some lessons and now her horse can run a pretty nice pole pattern. The rest of the day the girls watched movies, made cookies and just had a quiet evening. Mark and I went out on a date. We went to Des Moines to Jordan Creek mall and to PF Chang for Chinese. On Sunday morning our family and Morgan went to church in Boone. Morgan even borrowed a dress of jayden's.  After church Morgan's parents came and got he

Morgan's Stay

7/19/16 Mark was the rodeo driver for the Tuesday rodeo to Washington Iowa. He has made many trips to Washington Iowa, more than he ever cared too, in being part of the Biodeisel board. Today there were heavy storms and flash flood warnings in southern Iowa, but Washington was still under drought conditions. Mark, Jake,  and Jayden headed down the road for the 3 hour drive. I watched the radar and weather channel showing  tornado watches and warnings. While in route ,  Jayden called and said rain came down hard in Washington and the rodeo got cancelled. They made it an hour and a half and had to turn around. They did stop for some good ice cream. A long haul to turn around and go back. That is just part of the rodeo road. Wednesday the heat came on with temps  in the 90’s and humidity. It was just  the start of many hot steamy days ahead. We all were up early in the morning with plans to get a lot done for the day. It didn’t matter that it was early, it was already hot and humid out

County Fair Horse Game Day and Power Outage

7/17/16 Sunday in the wee hours a big storm rolled in. Jake, Jayden, Jaynie, and I were in the camper. I heard the thunder and lightning long before the rain. It seemed like it lasted a long time, at least an hour. Eventually it rained pretty hard. Crashes of lightning were very close and rattled the camper. Jake made me laugh, he crawled out of his bunk to tell me he was worried about the Dairy Queen Dilly bars in the campers freezer if the power should go out. I had to laugh about that. I was thankful Luke did not stay because he would have been scared. It was pretty rough, then the power went out. When we woke at 7AM, we thought it was just the camper out of power, turned out not only the entire fairgrounds, but the entire town of Ft. Dodge and some surrounding towns. This would be the start of an interesting day. The horse show would go on as scheduled, but not under ideal conditions. We already had to move it indoors, which was a much smaller pen for games events. Then they had t

County Fair Show Day

7/16/16 Saturday at the county fair was a beautiful pleasant day in the low 80's. Luke had the most fun at the fair with his friend Alex L. As much as I don’t like kids play pretending they are shooting guns and killing people, that seems to be what Alex likes to play. And so the boys had sticks as guns and ran around the fair for 3 days shooting the bad guys. They had so much fun together, hiding behind trees, climbing on  tractors . As long as they were together, we felt they were safe. Us moms checked on them from time to time.   Today was the horse show day. This day is usually a little stressful and disappointing. We think Tex is a great horse and Jayden does an excellent job with him, however she cannot compete against the show horses. She has had a Condon girl in her group over the years. Her horses compete at the Iowa state fair and win in halter and western pleasure. That is pretty tough to compete with. Jayden got a blue ribbon in halter and a red in showmanship beca
