A bug called the Japanese beetle did some damage this year. They came into our backyard and nibbled on the asparagus tall plants until there was nothing left but stems. Then the started in on all the trees in the backyard and soon the leaves were full of holes, and dying. The trees do not die, it just destroys the leaves. This happened all across the area. Mark had to spray the fields with crop dusters to keep them from destroying the crops. They have a kind of metallic sheen to them and are round, larger than a lady bug. They have little feelers on the legs and it makes them stick to things. They fly and sometimes land on you. I am not a fan. I would imagine this will be a new problem each year.
