Our family headed to Des Moines for a family
weekend outing. On Friday, we went to the Jordan Creek Mall, ate at a Mongolian
grill, then did some shopping. I have a terrible time shopping. Either the
prices seem to high, the quality too cheap, or I don’t like the look or fit. Later we checked in at the Drury hotel and let the kids
swim. The pool was an indoor/ outdoor pool and with temps in the 20’s it made
the pool a bit cold for us. Jake had no problem, he swam under and was outdoors
swimming around. I stayed in the hot tub. Last, we went out for dinner at an Italian restaurant.
On Saturday, we enjoyed the continental breakfast choice of giant waffle, oatmeal, fruit, eggs, sausage, hash browns, or pastries. Next we headed to Bloomfield and on to Brad and Suzy’s for the
big surprise party for Uncle LaVern. We celebrated his 80th birthday. Surprise
parties always confuse people with the start time. The party was 2-4:00, meaning the guest of honor arrives at 2. However, people always think that it means to show up to the party
at 2:00. There was a dozen people in Suzy’s garage to yell surprise to LaVern when
he came in. Verna Mae had him blind folded and he was quite surprised.
Over the next half hour people showed up and the garage was overflowing. Lots of friends and families and even a large Amish family. The kids and I were very intrigued by the Amish. They had the cutest brown eyed twin boys age 4. They had the bowl hair cut, yellow shirt with tailored little pants and suspenders. They were so cute. The party had a catered meal and cake and the best part was the entertainment. They had a couple come in and sing and play guitar. They were amazing even as a couple aged 55 and 22. They could sing and play like no other. Kimberly had a terrible time with flights and Kelly ended up driving to Cedar Rapids to get her. Both girls missed the whole party and got in around 8:30. Later in the evening, the kids played card games and Jake watched tv with Uncle Tim. As the night went on more and more sang. We even convinced Mark to sing the song he sang at our wedding reception. He sang, Georege Strait, “The Chair”. It was awesome and I finally got it on video! I have always thought he has a good voice and I like to hear him sing. He was hesitant, but did it. Tim was his background singer. It was late when we got to our hotel in Bloomfield and stayed the night. The next morning, we headed home on roads of snow and high wind.
