It is very rare to have school
cancelled due to cold temperatures. I am so glad the schools have enough sense
to do so. I kept Luke home on Monday because it was bitter cold and a snow
storm was expected with 6-8 inches of snow. They did ended up with an
early out, but I did not want him stuck on a school bus somewhere and he is the
last one off the bus. Tuesday was a late start day. Then it got bitter, high of -5, with wind
chills as low as -40 on the 7th and school was cancelled. Schools
were delayed on the 8th, but homeschool must go on. If we school on the cold days,
we can take off and enjoy the sunny warm days in the spring. The kids have had
a hard time getting back in the groove of school this semester. We have been taking it easy,
starting an hour later and having a lighter load. It is hard with Luke home and
keeping him occupied. He doesn’t think he should have to do school on a snow
day. It is hard on the animals in this cold. Jayden put the horses in stalls on Monday and we did
chores together with all animals in the shop. They are much better off in
there! By Thursday the horses needed to get out of their stalls. I had gone to
town in the afternoon to get groceries and by the time I got home the wind was
howling and snow was really blowing. Luke had gotten home early too. We still
decided to get the horses back in their pens. That was quite an experience.
They came out to the shock of the wind in their faces and did not like it. Once
in their pens, they ran and bucked and rolled in the snow. The rest of the
night the wind howled and I felt so thankful for my warm cozy home. On Friday, after being cooped up in the house all week, I was happy to go with Jayden to The World's Toughest Rodeo at the Iowa Event Center in Des Moines. The two of us decided last minute to go and Mark was happy to take the boys out to eat and stay home. The rodeo had rough stock and barrel racing. The ground was the worst I have ever seen, hard packed sticky clay. The barrel racers were good, fast and fun to watch. They also has a serpentine group that performed in the dark with Christmas tree type lights outlining their hats, arms, legs and saddles. It was very cool and they were very good. Other than the obnoxious, foul mothed people that got louder with every beer, we had a pretty good night.
Here are some photos of the kids cooped up in the house. Jacob picked up the toys in the basement and said he wants it to be his man cave.
Luke loves to play with is farm equipment up close. Jayden enjoys reading as long as her cat is by her.
No matter how much I monitor their electronic turns, it is never long enough. This is by far their favorite thing to do.
