2/7/24 Leading up to the Super Bowl for the past 2 weeks, Brock P has been in the spotlight. It may be that my social media knows what I have been looking at and just floods me with Niners and Brock posts. It has been so awwesome as it has been a platform for him to share his faith. He is so solid and not afraid to share. He has been quoting scripture on television and every form of social media. It is just awesome.
If I told anyone, I knew he was going to the Superbowl, people would say yeah right. They would think, yeah its easy to say now. But, what if I really did? In my mind, I knew this kid was something special, something extra back when he was in his forst year at ISU. I remember the first time I heard his name, Brock Purdy from Perry. Now, I am not a Cyclone fanatic or a football fanatic. I am an ISU alum and always rooted for ISU. He is a guy who shows his faith before with a huge audience. Mark had little interest in going to Iowa state games and I told him that first year, the next time he gets an offer for football tickets, I would like to go. And we did in fact get to see Brock play a few times. He was a freshmen and started playing quarterback after the starter was injured. Most freshemen are red shirted the first year and many college football players play 5 years. Brock graduated after 4. I watched him play and thought, he was good, real good. I became a fan, and an ISU football fan, and a Brock Purdy fan. Over the 4 years that he played, I tried to listen in to the ballgames on the radio and go to at least one a year. I saw him play a few times. Just seeing him throw the ball and how well he did, I thought wow. One year I asked Mark if he thought he could go pro. He said, "no he is too small." I figured my husband knew more than I did about NFL, but something in my mind was saying, lets just wait and see, he could be the exception. I watched senior night on television as Coach Campbell had tears and hugged Brock like he would his own son. Coach Campbell's expression was one of deep appreciation. After graduation, I wondered where Brock would go and what he would do. He was so talented a player. Then one day I heard he was the last pick of the draft, "Mr. Irrelevant." I was excited for him, it seemed to be another platform for his light to shine. He was always sharing his faith. Then a 49ers quarterback had an injury and Brock was put into the game. He came so close to the Super Bowl last year, but an elbow injury during the playoff game cost them their chance. And from there, the rest is history...he is Superbowl bound!
This last game the 49erd against the Lions was an interesting game. All along, I have siad I am a Brock Purdy fan and if he loses a game, I am still a fan and if he makes the Super bowl, awesome, if not, he is still awesome. When the game started out, Mark and I were watching and things were happening quick. In the first couple minutes the Lions scored. It was not going well and it was looking doubtful that the 49ers would do well. Mark was already convinced it was done and over. He asked if I wanted to bet the game. He had already shifted and was rooting for the Lions. He told me that the team that has the most running yards wins the game and the 49ers were not looking good. At halftime the Lions had a big lead. I told him it's not over until its over and I was still confident in my team. If they lost, that was ok too, but I have had this feeling from the beginning of the season that we would see Brock in the Super Bowl. After half time, the Niners came back with a vengeance. They had some amazing plays and the most amazing catch of all time by Aiyuik. What a game it was and sure enough the Niners won their game!! I don't think Mark could believe it! I should have made a bet! It was a sweet victory. Now they are Super Bowl bound!****The Lions stormed out to a 24-7 lead, behind a 42-yard rushing touchdown by receiver Jameson Williams, a 1-yard touchdown by David Montgomery and a 15-yard run by Jahymr Gibbs. Williams added a touchdown catch with 56 seconds left, but Detroit was unable to recover the onside kick on the ensuing possession. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 20 of 31 passes for 267 yards for San Francisco, but his 21-yard run in the fourth quarter two plays before Mitchell’s touchdown effectively put the game out of Detroit’s reach. With the ball on the 3-yard line in the final seconds of the first half, Lions coach Dan Campbell opted for a field goal instead of maintaining his reputation as the NFL’s most aggressive coach in short-yardage situations. mDetroit came out in the second half and did not score another point until the final minute of the franchise’s first conference championship game since the 1991 season. Purdy found 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk for a 51-yard catch that bounced off the helmet of Lions defensive back Kindle Vildor. Aiyuk scored a 6-yard touchdown three plays later. McCaffrey scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to tie it at 24 with 3:02 left in the third quarter, field goal kicker Jake Moody added his second field goal early in the fourth quarter, and Mitchell’s touchdown gave San Francisco the lead for good. 49ers tight end George Kittle secured the onside kick to secure the Super Bowl berth.
