This was Luke's first year getting involved with homecoming. I guess it has been a long standing tradition to toilet paper houses. I told him I was ok with it as long as he was behaving, and following the rules and being smart. Some of the kids were not and they caused some major issues. One teacher got so angry with some students that he threatened them and swore at them and it even made the news. The rest of the teachers encourage it. Luke thought it was fun and made sure he hung out with the non-trouble maker bunch. He has to really be careful in how he chooses his crowd. Toilet paper. Country Club verses Country was the only day of the week that Luke decided to dress the part. He wore overalls. His shirtless option he decided he wouldn't wear to school, but it made me laugh.
Luke went to homecoming this year with a date. His friends were going as a group with a friend group of girls. The girls were freshmen and Luke was feeling a lot of pressure to ask a certain girl. He said he would just go as a date and he really hadn't talked to the girl much. He knew people that knew her family and she is a 4H girl that shows cattle and goats. Luke asked her 2 weeks before the dance. I asked him questions about her dress, color, and flowers. This was all new to him. In the past several years, kids ask their dates in clever and creative ways, most typically with a poster. Some kids get very elaborate and it reminds me of a marriage proposal. I think it is a little much. Luke was not about all that and just walked up and asked. He really wasn't too into the whole date and dance part of it. That is until the week of, little by little he got more excited about going. He worked the hardest on Dad's Ford truck that he would get to drive. He had it shinning inside and out. He also asked his date what shirt to wear and tucked in or out. By Friday he was pretty giddy and excited. I had ordered flowers for them too. My only job was to get the flowers to them. It was unusually hot, 90's and the flowers were little roses and needed refrigerated. Of course, I left the flowers at home and had to make a mad dash to the house and back, 20 minutes each way. Luke was invited to one of the boys in his friend groups house for a pre-dance get together and get ready event for kids and parents. The dance followed the football game on Friday, so the kids left after homecoming to get ready and hang out.
