Start of School

Each year for school is different from the last. This year came with it's own changes and challenges. I am so thankful that I have been homeschooling my kids. As the end of the Spring 2020 and the beginning of fall 2020, I am happy that things won't be changing drastically. With the pandemic , so many families are struggling with the new schooling. Some schools are starting 100% online, some are doing hybrid learning, which means they go some days in person to the school, and some days online. Then there are the smaller community schools, like Ogden that are 100% in person. With the new term "Hybrid Learning" being difficult enough, throw in the fact that all students and teachers are required to wear a mask. That just seems ridiculous. It is crazy, chaotic, and stressful for teachers, parents, and students. I cannot imagine how difficult this school year is going to be. There is nothing regular, or a normal schedule to fall into and so many unknowns. At any point and time the schools can change the plan. I also question the mental impact of what this does to the kids. Because of all this, many parents  have decided to try to homeschool. Without any planning or preparation, I know first hand, it is a very difficult routine to get into.
Our school year looks different because Jacob is taking Applied Math at Ogden. This is a college level DMACC course that he will need for his Auto Tech program. He can either take it while in high school or later at the college. Not only can he get extra help while going through it in high school, he can also have it fully paid for by the school. Seems like a win win to me. After class in Ogden, Jake drives to Ames  where he is taking an Automotive Technology career advantage course from 12:50-2:50 everyday. This was a big decision for Jake to make and for me to let him jump into. The college anticipates about a 50/50 in person/online class. I liked that idea so that Jake won't be on the road driving to Ames 5 days a week. He got his textbook and it is rather large and intimidating.
Our mornings start at home 8Am with both boys. In poking fun at the mask requirements, I posted signs all over for our school year that state, "You are required NOT to wear a mask." Everywhere you go these days you see signs asking you to wear your mask.
I like to ease into our first week of school with a half course load. I am excited about hitory of WWII this year. I found great curriculum through the National WWII History Museum that I will follow. We are doing one week of school before spending one week in Florida on vacation. Jake made the choice to stay back in Iowa, which was probably a good choice for all his classes.
The first week of class, Mark brought me a bouquet of flowers. He had a card that said he appreciated me teaching our boys. I thought that was very sweet. He is a flower giver, but these were some of the most special. I love that my husband supports me and has from the beginning. Never once has he doubted my homeschooling or questioned whether we should continue. In times where I was ready to send the boys back on the yellow school bus, he encourages me.

Volleyball

Jake  went with Karen after school and to the field. My mom, Luke and I went to Jayden’s  Volleyball game in Coon Rapids.  They played 4 games all losses. They were not having a good serving night and that really hurt them.  Still enjoy watching them learn.

Treasures

In the morning we took 3 of our 4 cats to the vet for shots. The 4 th cat decided to wander this morning missing his appointment. On our way out, we passed a rummage sale and stopped. We got some major treasures for next to nothing. The church ladies were so fascinated with Jacob's interest in old radios and televisions. They just adored him and marked the prices way down and gave him some for free. We loaded up on kids books, got some board games, and a few other treasures. Jake ended up with a mini  television , an old radio and Polaroid camera. After lunch the boys went straight to the field. My friend Carolyn and her daughter Tabby came to ride horses. What started out to be a chilly day 45, turned out nice and sunny. We had coats on, but it was a great day to ride. We rode through our hay patch and along the waterway near the highway. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.

Dayton Fun Show

It has been cold and windy for the past week, highs of 45. Today the sun was shinning and it got up to 60. There was one final horse show for the season at the Dayton arena. We took Jayden and Jacob while Luke went with Grammer and Po and was supposed to come later. It was a fun show geared for practice and the kids. Jake did really well on Winnie, he rode in walk and trot, barrels, and poles. He did some loping. Jayden did pleasure, milk can, barrels, poles, and a jumping event. Her horse Tex really jumps high for the jump event. Down in the arena, there was'nt any wind and the sun came out. It made for a nice day.
