People are still slowly recovering from the derecho storms. Many are without power and water after several days. The damage and destruction will take weeks to months to clean. Our neighbor asked if we could help haul some of her large trees away. Mark, Mich, and Luke spent a day working, cutting limbs, and hauling away brush with the tractor and straight truck. She offered to pay, but Mark was happy to help. President Trump visited Cedar Rapids and is providing disaster relief. I was anxious to watch the news to see all the coverage of the storm damage and hear how Trump's visit went. WHO 13 started with the top story about Drake college students signing contracts to say they would not attend large parties and would turn in others if they saw large crowds in order to stop COVID spread. It was completely absurd. The second story was about Trump's visit and lasted only 2 minutes long. They quoted Trump for a few seconds and made him look bad. If a president visits our state for disaster, that should be the top story and should receive the most time. After a couple minutes about Trump's visit, the news went into a long in depth story about an old dog at the animal rescue league. They also spent a good amount of time promoting Biden and talking about the Democratic convention. Biden's wife and Bill Clinton spoke highly and had lots to say in support of Biden. It was like watching a long promotional commercial. I was shocked that this was the news. I had not realized how left wing and biased the television station was. I have lost a lot of respect for our local news stations.
This week I have been planning school curriculum and making some big choices for Jake's Junior year of high school. I am praying for guidance in how best to do Jake's education. We are looking at the possibility of taking a Career Advantage course through DMACC and also looking at a math course offered at Ogden High School.
Friday Luke didn't want to go to his second guitar lesson. We had tears and talked all the way to Ames about it. It makes me so sad to see his gift not used. It reminds me of Jayden and how one day she just quit singing. She has so much natural music and singing talent. She had an instructor say she has perfect pitch and that is rare and a gift. We hoped she would use her gift and maybe someday she will. I just ask Luke for one lesson a week and two home practices for maybe 20 minutes. To get that, it is always a fight and battle. Luke plays so well and has a talent he can share with so many people. He has shared it with friends, family, elderly, for holidays, and church. I had really hoped he would have the motivation and desire to play. He never gets nervous to play, he just doesn't enjoy it. I will be sad to let him stop, but I feel he is going to hate it and never want to play.
Mark took the boys to the tractor pulls in Webster City. Mark's cousin Suzy's son Chan drove in the pulls. He is engaged to a girl that has driven in the pulls for a few years. This was his first pull and he won! It was an exciting night for him!
Luke has been working up at the shop. After Noah showed him a few things with the welder, Luke has been wanting to do some projects. He went and found as many old horse shoes as he could find around and started by grinding the rust off them. Mark got him some welding gloves to be safe. He made some hooks out of the shoes and wants to make a shelf for a gun. I love that he is creative, patient, and productive. What a cool thing to learn!
