The last youth rodeo of the year. The kids were looking forward to competing
and I was looking forward to my last rodeo duties. I am resigning as rodeo speed
event director. My duties and expectations kept growing and more and more was put on me and I just didn't like the way things were handles. Next year I am looking forward to watching my kids participate
in a lawn chair with my camera.
It wasn’t supposed to rain today. It rained in the night, so right away we knew things would be wet and muddy. We got the horses out of the pen at the crack of dawn (6:30) before they had a chance to roll or get muddy. It was clear, until we pulled into the arena, then the rain started. It went from light sprinkle to light rain on and off right up until the rodeo started. It rained on and off in the beginning, then it let up, the sun came out and got hot. We kept the horses in the trailer as long as possible to keep them dry. Jayden had Tex for sperpentine and flag race, and ace for barrels, poles, and goats. Jake had Winnie for his events. The arena was open for 10 minutes for the kids to warm horses up, so I warmed Tex up a bit for Jayden. WarrenB. came with two of his grandkids to watch. My parents came to watch too. Dad has not been able to venture out much and has had such a slow recovery. Today was also their 46th Anniversary.
The arena was a sloppy mess and I had to hike through numerous times setting up barrels, poles, flags, and picking up numerous bell boots that fell off horses. I did not have muck boots, and after trudging through the mud so many times, my boots were a huge mess. The contestant participants were way low from past rodeos. Its kind of sad to see the youth rodeo dwindling at Dayton. There are a lot of factors and I am not really surprised.
Jayden had a great day, she ran a decent run on Ace, had a great pole run, won the flag race on Tex, and took second place in goat tying. What a true cowgirl, getting ioff her horse in mud puddles, running to the goat and flanking him down in the mud. She missed the first tie, had to stick the muddy rope in her teeth and try again. She got him tied and got a time. She was a muddy mess, even had mud in the face.
Wahoo, she got two checks totaling $110. It was a very good day. I was so proud of her, as she worked with her horse all week long. Lots of practice slow working barrels, poles, and tying her goat. Her time has paid off. Jacob ran the barrels and poles and keeps improving. The arena was such a sloppy mess that his horse was not wanting to lope for him. His hat fell off in the mud too. The hat that once was mom's rodeo hat. Now Jake has really broke it in for himself. Luke got to participate in the little kids under 7 events, stick horse, roping, goat tail untie. He had the most fun playing with Mary and Xavier, Warren’s grandkids. They went clear to the top of the hill and walked the bleachers and hill side.
Jacob’s friend Alex S. rode in the barrel and pole events with Jake too. He also rode his very first mini bull. He did well, hung on and rode for about 4 seconds. He landed in the mud and loved it. I asked both my boys what they thought of that, hoping they have no interest whatsoever. Jacob said he was scared for him and Luke told me he prayed for him. I sure don’t want my boys into rough stock. Cheyenne was the winner of the all-around buckle this year. So happy for her, she is very dedicated to her horses and competeing and probably has the best sportsmanship of any girl I know. Very sweet girl.
