The last day of the county fair and of course the
hottest with temps near 99 degrees. The other livestock shows had cooler weather, indoor arena, and last maybe all of 4 hours. Horse showing 17 hours always the hottest two days of the fair and the hottest day outdoors. The morning started at 10, we were all hoping
they would move that earlier as they have done in past years due to the heat. My parents, Alice, and Mark all came and stuck it out in
the hot heat to support Jayden. She wasn't sure about riding in the first two classes, but decided to try anyway. She got
second places in both break the gait and egg and spoon. She was so very close
in both classes and in break the gait, I
thought she won. So close is the story of her 4H horse career. On to the speed
events, poles, barrels, mystery event, flags, jumping figure 8. She did well in
all the events, expect knocked poles in pole bending.
There was such tough competition. The two kids that run in the Juniors with Jayden had some of the fastest times all day. Payton is a very outgoing nice little girl and she took home trophy after trophy and she did last year too. All we were hoping for was just one. Just one trophy would have made Jayden so happy and would have made all her hard work worth it. She put so much more time and practice into her horse this year. It took so long to complete the classes with so many horses. It was a long hot day. They didn’t break for lunch and it got over around 2:30. It was so hot. I took water to Jayden between each class and I had a bottle of something in my hand at all times. I just can’t seem to drink enough when I am hot. Unfortunately they would not allow the horses to go home early, they could not be released until 7:30. We went back and rested and stayed cool in the camper. In the meantime the trophy winners and state fair winners were getting all dressed up to go to the parade of champions dinner. Jayden was so close so many times, but this just wasn't her year. Even Jaynie and Maggie got to go this year. Jaynie didn’t have a dress, so she borrowed Jayden’s that we brought with us. It was kind of sad and Jayden was feeling kind of bummed. We also got to see Payton carrying her new buckle for winning the top honors in Junior horse project. We are happy for her and the other kids, but it is hard not to be envious when you want something so bad. By 6:00 we started loading all our stuff out of the camper so Wade could take it home. We hooked up the horse trailer and started loading all our horse stuff. We cleaned the stall, Jayden was so red faced and hot. Then we got all the 4H projects out of the auditorium, loaded the horse and headed home. We drove home stinky, sweaty, tired, and dehydrated. All I could think about as I drove was why do we do this? Is it really worth it? I do not enjoy it, does Jayden really enjoy this? She has a super attitude considering everything. I am super proud of her for that. I just don’t think I am cut out for the county fair. There are so many other horse events we can enjoy. We have been so close yet so far for 3 years. Is it going to be any different next year? I think I know the answer. Tired and exhausted we got home at 8:30 with a horse and trailer to unload and the truck full. It was 10:30 when everyone got to bed and I was so glad the county fair was over. Tomorrow morning, bright and early bible school…
