Luke had been up early washing and preparing for show day at the county fair. When I walked into the barn he had a girl braiding Joker's mane. I had to grin because these girls show up and are more than happy to help Luke out. Joker also had his tail braided and Luke asked me if I could braid it better for him. I decided I would try a braid from the top starting as a French braid. I was kind of proud of my braid and before long Luke was leading his horse to line up for his first class, halter geldings. I snapped a photo and sent it to Jayden. She messaged me right back, but unfortunately I did not open my phone and read it. She had said, "NO mom!! Take the braid out." I really don't know what I was thinking. I knew better and had a moment without thinking. Halter class you want the biggest fluffiest show tail. You want to show off a beautiful long thick tail. Many people use fake tails jut to make them look big and full. Joker has a beautiful tail, but on this day, he had a braid that was like a baseball bat when he whipped it back and forth. It occurred to me half way through the class and I was embarrassed. Anyone paying attention probably thought we were knew nothing. I felt like crawling in a hole. The halter class draws the biggest crowd of the day, everyone is watching and it is always a big deal to see who will win. I had Jayden on facetime as she laughingly lectured me in disbelief. Joker looked amazing and I personally though he looked the best, but I didn't know what the judge would say. He kept looking Joker over and he was eyeing some of the others. I would have been happy with him in the top 5, our barrel racing/roping horse that Jayden bought from a feedlot for $2500. Soon the judge pulled his favorite horses out and Joker was on top! He won the halter class, he won the grand champion halter gelding! Thankful he did not judge based on his braided tail. In fact he told Luke to get that braid out of that tail.
