Homeschool Day

Two weeks of homeschool and I am getting a feel for what it will be like. It is different and it is not easy. I do enjoy it and I am happy the kids are here and I get to teach and learn with them.  Here is a typical day.
At 6:45 I drag myself out of bed and start waking Luke up. He is usually very sleepy and it takes awhile to get him going. By 7:15 he is usually in a good mood and raring to go.  I am then trying to get Jayden and Jacob to rise by playing classical music really loud in the hallway. Luke is outside waiting for the bus by the time he pulls in at 7:25.  He is the first one on the big yellow bus and I wave as he drives away. He has really liked school so far. Jayden and Jacob have about an hour to get moving, make their beds, get dressed, eat breakfast, feed animals and have a little free time. At 8:20 we are at the table with a morning devotion and prayer. By 8:30 they are to be at their desks and starting their work for the day. Each one has a list of subjects and what they need to do for the day.  Jayden sits at a desk in her room and goes down her list and works very independent. She requires little help. She even makes projects and does extra research for herself. Jacob tends to get off task easily and drags through his work a little more. I spend most of the time checking on him and helping. His math is a struggle as we are trying to master his facts. Science is fun, I read with him and do the work together. His first chapter has all been on insects and he is very into that. He has caught a few dragonflies, some grasshoppers, and praying mantis'. We also bought a butterfly kit to demonstrate metamorphosis. He is having fun with it. He really takes an interest and likes to learn when it is an interesting subject. We also have been watching and taking notes together over the series "America The Story of us". He enjoys the DVD and the great computer animation.. We take a mid morning break for 20 minutes with a snack. We try to gt done close to noon, but that doesn’t always happen. We break for almost an hour for lunch, then finish after. By the time we finish, I get the dishes done,  do a load of laundry, check papers for the day, then it is time to take Jayden to volleyball. Once I drop her off at 3:35, I head home for Luke to get off the bus at 4:15. I have about 45 minutes with him, then go back to get Jayden from volleyball at 5:15. We feed the horses, then start supper. After more dishes, getting papers and school work ready for the next day, it is time for baths and Luke to bed by 8:30. I like to read a little or watch tv before going to bed at 10:30. So I have very little free time. I would say that the hardest adjustment is time. I don’t know how to squeeze it all in. Now on top of all that, this week we are going to youth group on Wed nights and will be starting swimming lessons and I am going to try to start a bible study on Thursday mornings. Jake does art class on Monday and Friday for 40 minutes at the Boxholm school. I don’t have a bit of free time and I am worn out. I know this will be a challenge, but I am up for it.

Volleyball

Jake  went with Karen after school and to the field. My mom, Luke and I went to Jayden’s  Volleyball game in Coon Rapids.  They played 4 games all losses. They were not having a good serving night and that really hurt them.  Still enjoy watching them learn.

Treasures

In the morning we took 3 of our 4 cats to the vet for shots. The 4 th cat decided to wander this morning missing his appointment. On our way out, we passed a rummage sale and stopped. We got some major treasures for next to nothing. The church ladies were so fascinated with Jacob's interest in old radios and televisions. They just adored him and marked the prices way down and gave him some for free. We loaded up on kids books, got some board games, and a few other treasures. Jake ended up with a mini  television , an old radio and Polaroid camera. After lunch the boys went straight to the field. My friend Carolyn and her daughter Tabby came to ride horses. What started out to be a chilly day 45, turned out nice and sunny. We had coats on, but it was a great day to ride. We rode through our hay patch and along the waterway near the highway. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.

Dayton Fun Show

It has been cold and windy for the past week, highs of 45. Today the sun was shinning and it got up to 60. There was one final horse show for the season at the Dayton arena. We took Jayden and Jacob while Luke went with Grammer and Po and was supposed to come later. It was a fun show geared for practice and the kids. Jake did really well on Winnie, he rode in walk and trot, barrels, and poles. He did some loping. Jayden did pleasure, milk can, barrels, poles, and a jumping event. Her horse Tex really jumps high for the jump event. Down in the arena, there was'nt any wind and the sun came out. It made for a nice day.
